About the role:
We are building our oral care formulation capability in-house. This is a hands-on, individual contributor role with no team below and no formulation supervision above. You will own our formulation work end to end — from brief through stability sign-off to factory trial. You will work alongside a small cross-functional team drawn from food technology and dentistry backgrounds. You will be the chemistry expert in the room. If you want to design formulations rather than execute someone else’s, and want ownership rather than a slot in a large R&D hierarchy, this is that role.
What you will own:
Develop toothpaste, mouthwash and oral care formulations from a product brief and cost target — selecting the abrasive, humectant, binder, surfactant, active and flavour systems yourself, and defending each choice
• Deliver the current project pipeline, including a nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste and a specialised stain-removal toothpaste
• Set and control performance parameters — RDA, PCR, pH, viscosity and fluoride availability — against the claim and the price point
• Resolve active–excipient compatibility issues, including fluoride source selection against the abrasive system
• Design and run stability programmes, accelerated and real-time, with clear kill criteria
• Run factory trials at our contract manufacturing partner, scale up from lab to production batch, and troubleshoot batch failures on site
• Reformulate for cost without compromising the claim, and evaluate new raw materials and suppliers on technical merit
• Ensure compliance with BIS IS 6356, Cosmetics Rules 2020, Legal Metrology and applicable ISO methods, and prepare technical documentation to support claims
What we require:
Non-negotiable: you must have independently developed oral care formulations from a blank sheet — not adapted an existing supplier or licensor base by changing flavour, colour or a single active.
• Either a degree from the Institute of Chemical Technology (Mumbai) or an equivalent institution, with 2+ years in a formulation role
• Or 5-6+ years of formulation experience specifically in oral care — toothpaste, mouthwash or dentifrice
• Working command of the toothpaste system: cleaning vs. thickening silica, calcium carbonate and DCP; the sorbitol/glycerin/water balance; CMC and gum systems; surfactant selection and its compatibility constraints
• Practical understanding of RDA and PCR — how they are measured, and which formulation levers move them
• Hands-on lab experience. You will be making batches yourself, not briefing someone else to make them
• Willingness to travel to our manufacturing partner for trials
Good to have:
• Experience with nano-hydroxyapatite, fluoride-free or SLS-free systems
• Preservation systems and interpretation of PET results
• Experience in a D2C or fast-moving small-team environment
• Exposure to packaging interactions, particularly flavour scalping in laminate tubes
About the fit:
We want to be direct so we do not waste your time. This role is not a match if your experience is limited to executing approved master formulas, running QC against a specification, or modifying an existing base formulation supplied by a vendor or principal. These are valuable skills, but they are not what this role needs.
